Day 3 - Boulevard to Brawley

We rode 70 miles today in 6+ hours. Temps were cool at camp and in the 90s by mid-morning. We had several short climbs then descended 3000 feet in 10 miles with 6% grades. For a flatlander from Illinois it was a rush! Wide well-paved shoulder free of debris. We were fortunate to have light cross-winds as they can be nasty. As we descended a huge wind turbine farm came into view - am guessing nearly 100 - which verified the windiness.
Welcome to the Imperial Valley. We identified celery, alfalfa, cabbage, melons and mustard. Had to adjust to the temps and bright sunlight.
The map said state route 80 east of Ocotillo was "very rough, broken and full of potholes". Just like Chicago! The surface was the gating factor speed-wise.
We decided we preferred climbing to this.
I forgot to mention that we rode by the border fence west of Jacumba (see photo). It is high; had mixed feelings seeing it.
Stopped for a cold Gatorade in Seeley. We sat in the shade eating our sandwiches and veggies. We are below sea level (see line on sugar plant photo).
Forgot to mention riding through Plaster City, just a large Sheetrock plant (no city).
We rolled into Brawley and are camped beside the rodeo grounds. We hope they keep the lawn sprinklers off.
One rider had a cracked rim today, and another got a new wheel as his cassette (the gears on the back wheel) was slipping.
One blog reader said there are only photos of food. Yes- we ride to eat! Have added some faces below. Enjoy!
