"We're going uphill into the wind, so this must be the right direction."
"It's rained all day, we have a strong headwind, and we're still riding hills. What's not to like about Florida?"
These quotes from today's ride capture the spirit of the day.
But ... let's back up to breakfast. We enjoyed a good night's sleep at our one and only B&B on the tour. This morning our hostess, Brenda, served up a wonderful breakfast (see photos): macadamia-nut French toast topped with locally-made cane syrup, bacon, sausage patties, home-made tomato juice and various fruits.
We bid farewell to comfort and elegance, and set out in the rain. Our first stop was Richie's Subs & Sweets in Madison, where we enjoyed home-made key lime tarts and cheesecake (see photo).
Our next stop was the side of the road a few miles later. Terry was riding with us and suddenly heard a clicking noise. Turns out an industrial staple had gone through his tire (see photo). Fortunately the hole in the tire was tiny, so a new tube got him back on the road.
Miraculously it did not rain during the tire change. But it sure did the rest of the day, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. We also had stiff headwinds of 10-20 mph that kept our speeds in the low teens. Cresting on the hills, you had to fight to stay above 10 mph. So we were fortunate the route was only 57 miles.
We crossed the Suwanee River, high from the recent rains. Past the river we got onto route 132. What a treat - mile after mile of wildflowers on both sides! (see photo taken in rain)
Our destination today is Lee's Campground near Interstate 75 and route 136. We put up tents between rain gusts, and made good use of a pavilion. The campground has a bicycle sculpture which Jerry enjoyed (see photo).
Terry's wife has driven down from Michigan, and helped Terry and Bob Plant fix a great dinner of oriental chicken, fruit salad and apple / berry pies. I'll be going through food withdrawal after Monday!
