Somewhere in New Mexico or west Texas, I began to notice Blue Bell brand ice cream for sale in the convenience stores we frequent for cold water, ice cream and bathroom stops. The ice cream was usually available as sandwiches and cones. Better yet were stores with tubs of 10 to 20+ flavors including butter pecan, Dutch chocolate, key lime pie, pecan pralines 'n cream, and Southern blackberry cobbler. Soon I found myself looking forward to a daily afternoon Blue Bell treat. When the scenery was really boring, I would muse on which flavor to buy that day.
The ice cream itself is quite good: smooth with a respectable dairy fat level.
Blue Bell ice cream isn't sold in the Chicago area where I live. The company was founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas, outside of Houston. Their ice cream is sold in only twenty states. Yet Blue Bell is the third highest-selling brand of ice cream nationally, after Breyer's and Edy/Dreyers.
Linda used to live in Houston and has toured the Blue Bell factory in Brenham. She has good memories of the tasting room!
Blue Bell has enhanced the joy of our ride.
